Types of Science Degrees Online and Science Certificates Online

Completing a science program online has become a popular option recently because it presents working adults with the opportunity to advance their careers while keeping their full-time jobs. For example, if you pursue your computer science degree online you can work a regular job – perhaps in a related field like retail computer sales – while taking computer science courses in the evening. Earning your bachelor of science degree in any scientific field can increase your job security too; when the unemployment rate reached 6.7% in November 2008, the rate for people holding a bachelor's degree or higher was only 3.1% – less than half the national average.

Earning your science degree can mean finding a more interesting and rewarding career. There are many different fields and degree programs to choose from in the realm of science, but some of the most popular – and the careers they can lead you to – include:

  • Associate in Aviation Electronics (AET) – This degree generally takes two years of full-time coursework to complete and prepares you for licensure as an airframe or powerplant mechanic. After earning your AET you still must pass the appropriate A&P tests (general, airframe and/or powerplant) to acquire your FAA certification.
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biology – A Bachelor of Science degree in Biology typically requires four years of full-time study. This degree qualifies you for some entry-level lab tech positions, but most graduates go on to pursue a master’s degree or doctorate. A BS in Biology is excellent preparation if you are considering medical school.
  • Master of Agriculture (MOA) – Requiring one or two years of postgraduate coursework (and possibly a thesis as well, depending on your school), the MOA degree is designed for agricultural students who wish to gain advanced knowledge in one or two aspects of their field. Agricultural economics, animal science, entomology, plant pathology and several other specializations are available.
