Accredited Religious Studies and Theology Degrees Online

As a religious studies major, you will pursue an objective and thorough understanding of the world’s religions. In addition to studying specific faiths, you will also seek to gain knowledge about the nature of religion in general and its role in the life of individuals and societies. Christian colleges and other faith-based institutions are the most popular places to study this discipline, but many public universities also offer religious studies programs.

Online Degrees and Careers in Religious Studies

Religious studies degrees prepare you for a variety of clergy or clergy-related careers, such as priest, minister, chaplain, counselor, religious education teacher or director of religious development. Some students pursue religious studies for personal enrichment and to gain a better understanding of their faith, rather than to land a specific job.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that clergy held 670,100 jobs in 2008, and predicts that growth in the field will be about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2018. The popular employment website O*NET Online gives the median 2010 wages for clergy as $43,970 annually. As in many philosophy and liberal arts disciplines, religious studies majors who pursue an advanced degree (master’s or religous studies PhD) stand the best chance of landing stable, well-paying jobs.
