Political Science Degrees and Certificates Online or On-Campus

Some political science graduates go directly into jobs like campaigning, while others continue their education in an area of study that will help them find work in a politically related career. In fact, many careers in political science directly involve another field, such as business (lobbyist), education (civics teacher), journalism (press secretary), or law (district attorney). A bachelor's degree in political science is a great starting point for your professional career. In particular, those who are going on to pursue law degrees stand to benefit from getting their political science degree.

Whether you take your political science courses online or through a traditional on-campus program, it will almost certainly be a smart investment. The U.S. Department of Labor Statistics estimates that professionals with a bachelor's degree earn over $18,000 more annually when compared to someone with only a high school diploma.

Studying political science can lead to many high-profile, lucrative careers. Once you earn your political science degree, jobs will be available in a number of areas. Some of the most popular degrees in political science include:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science – This degree generally requires four years of full-time study, and students are encouraged to complete a one-semester internship as well. Depending on your area of concentration, a BA in Political Science prepares you for employment in civil service, diplomatic corps, electoral politics, political consulting or other fields. It is also an excellent degree to get if you are planning to attend law school.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Political Science – Requiring four or five years of postgraduate study, a PhD in Political Science qualifies you to teach political science at the university level. It can also lead to executive-level positions in government or other organizations if you have the right area of concentration.
