Online Master’s Degree Programs & Graduate Courses

A Master’s degree is third in the hierarchy of academic degrees awarded by colleges and universities. Acquiring an online MBA or master’s degree should generally take two years of postgraduate work, though this can vary depending on the educational institution and area of study. Your on-campus or online master’s program might also require you to complete a master’s thesis in addition to coursework. Some accredited universities now offer no GMAT MBAs and no GRE Master’s degree programs, which are very popular with students who want to avoid the time and expense associated with entrance exams.

Accredited Online Master’s Degrees & Master's Programs

You can earn an online master’s degree or you can attend a traditional on-campus master's program. Whichever you choose, there are hundreds of institutions ready to help you achieve your goal. Most distance learning students enter (or re-enter) the workforce upon completing their online master’s degree, but some continue their education with additional online programs. Your advanced degree is a wise investment in either case. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that master’s degree holders had a median weekly income of $1,300 in 2012, compared to $1,066 for those who have a bachelor’s degree and $652 for workers with only a high school diploma.

Many online master’s degrees fall into the “arts” or “sciences” categories. However, some do not; instead, your particular area of study can denote what type of master’s degree you earn. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) is the most common example of a degree named in this way, but others include the Master of Criminal Justice (MCJ) and Master of Education (MEd).

Some popular master’s degrees include:

  • Online Master’s in Education – A Master’s degree in Education (usually an MEd or MAEd) helps educators advance in their field. Many school districts now require you to earn this type of degree within five years of starting your teaching career.
  • Online Master’s in Business Administration – Earning an MBA is now widely considered one of the best ways to advance in the business field. Many companies require an MBA if you want to advance into an executive-level position.
  • Online Master’s in Healthcare Administration – Healthcare is one of the fastest-growing fields in the nation, creating a need for skilled healthcare managers and executives. Your Master’s in Healthcare Administration can prepare you to fill these lucrative and rewarding roles.
  • Online Master’s in Computer Science – Technology is critical to the modern workplace, and computer scientists create much of that technology. Earning your Master’s in Computer Science can provide you with advanced skills in this field, and may qualify you for advanced positions such as chief technology officer.
