The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that overall employment of social workers is expected to increase by about 25% through 2020. This is faster than the average for all professions. The availability of jobs in gerontological, mental health and substance social work are predicted to grow even more rapidly due to increased need in these areas. As with many other professions, achieving a higher level of education typically means better job opportunities for social workers.

Social Work Career Spotlight

Social workers generally are divided into two groups: direct-service social workers who work with people to cope with issues that come up in everyday life, and clinical social workers who are trained to diagnose and treat mental, behavorial and emotional health issues.

Direct-service social workers work directly with people who need social services, assessing their needs and directing them to the services suited for their needs. Examples of situations in which a direct-service social worker would become involved include those suffering through illness, losing a job, a death of someone near to them or divorce. Direct-service health workers continue to monitor patients to ensure treatment is effective.

Clinical social workers provide therapy to individuals and groups, helping them cope with issues such as depression and anxiety. Many of them work in private practice.

Both direct-service and clinical social workers often focus on particular areas in which to work, including family counseling, child counseling, school social work and healthcare.
