Types of Healthcare Degrees and Healthcare Certificates

Online healthcare programs are becoming increasingly popular because they allow working adults to keep their jobs while taking healthcare courses. For example, you can pursue your healthcare management degree online in the evening while continuing to work during the day – perhaps in a related field such as nursing. Healthcare degrees are almost always a valuable investment in any case; the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that healthcare careers are among the fastest-growing in the world, and such high demand means these jobs should stay largely recession-proof for the foreseeable future.

Whether you are simply taking healthcare courses to earn a certificate or pursuing a healthcare administration degree program that will take many years to complete, a healthcare education can bring you higher pay and opportunities for more rewarding work. Some of the more common healthcare degrees – and the careers they might lead you to – include:

  • Associate of Science (AS) in Nursing – You can earn your AS in Nursing with two years of full-time coursework. This degree qualifies you to sit for the NCLEX-RN and, if you pass, apply for licensure as a registered nurse. RNs with an AS in Nursing typically acquire entry-level positions in doctor’s offices, hospitals, and nursing homes.
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Healthcare Management – This is a four-year degree for those who want to manage healthcare services rather than be involved in clinical healthcare. A BS in Healthcare Management prepares you for jobs that deal with the administration and business challenges associated with the field, such as public relations and staff management.
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) – The MD professional degree generally requires four years of postgraduate coursework to complete, and is often followed by several more years of study, internship, and residency to attain a specialty. This degree is required to legally practice medicine, and graduates must also pass the USMLE.
