A general medical billing and coding certificate takes about a year to earn and teaches you the basics of the field. However, most medical employers prefer to hire billing and coding specialists who are Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT). This more advanced certification requires that you graduate from an associate’s degree program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) and pass an exam administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that employment in medical billing and coding will grow by 18% through 2016, which is faster than average when compared to all other occupations. Having an AHIMA certification greatly improves your chances of acquiring a top medical billing and coding job.
