Online Certification Programs - Six Sigma, Internet Marketing & Teaching Certificates

Both online and on-campus certification programs help prepare you for occupations such as medical billing that do not demand an academic degree but require learning specific skills. In other fields, such as engineering and education, it is important for professionals who already have a degree to update and expand their knowledge. In either case, online or on-campus certification programs provide the appropriate education and a document that certifies you as properly trained.

Types Online Certificate Programs and Certification Courses

You can earn your certificate program online or attend a traditional on-campus program. If you choose one of the many available online certificate programs you will be in good company; online certification programs have become very popular over the last several years. Some employers even offer their own certificates and training now. The right certificate can bring you better job assignments, greater career mobility, more personal satisfaction and a validation of your expertise. And they can be a smart investment as well; some high-end certificates – such as the U.S. Six Sigma Black Belt or PMP Certification – can lead to a salary of over $100,000 per year.

Certificates are available for hundreds of occupations, but they are particularly common in the business, health, technology and vocational fields. They generally fall into two broad categories:

  • Undergraduate Certificates typically require a high school diploma or GED before you can enroll. Classes are designed to teach you a specific set of skills and then certify your ability to use those skills. Most undergraduate certificate programs only provide you with noncredit credentials, but some also offer academic credits that can be applied toward earning an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.
  • Graduate Certificates require that you have a bachelor’s degree before enrolling. Classes are typically designed to update or enhance existing skills, or teach a new set of skills related to your current profession. Many graduate certificate programs offer you credits that can be applied toward earning a graduate degree.
