On-Campus and Online Associate’s Degree Programs

An associate's degree is the first degree in the hierarchy of academic degrees awarded by colleges and universities. Because they take about two years to earn, they are often called 2-year degrees. Associate of Arts (AA) and Associate of Science (AS) programs include general education classes, because most AA degrees and AS degrees are designed to allow you to continue your education at the bachelor’s level. Associate of Applied Science (AAS) programs typically include little general education coursework, as they are intended to prepare you to enter a profession. Job Outlook for AA Degrees, AS Degrees and Other Associate’s Degrees

Some on-campus and online associate’s degree programs are geared toward students who want to transfer to a four-year school and earn a bachelor’s degree. Others are designed to teach you the skills and knowledge you need to enter the workforce right after graduation. Nursing, law enforcement and paralegal work are just a few of the professions a 2-year degree can prepare you for. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that in 2012, associate’s degree holders had a median weekly income of $785 and an unemployment rate of 6.2%. This is significantly better than the statistics for workers with only a high school diploma, who earned an average of $652 per week and saw unemployment of 8.3%.
