The online education sector grew by nearly 17% in 2009. Approximately 5.6 million students were enrolled in at least one online course in the fall of that year, according to the Sloan Survey of Online Learning.

These figures may continue to increase, as schools such as Valdosta State University (VSU) in Georgia are launching new online degree programs, reports the VSU student newspaper, The Spectator. This fall, the institution will offer online degrees in criminal justice, office administration and technology as well as legal assistant studies.

newly adopted program is designed to convenience such students that may live too far away from campus to commute back and forth regularly," Dr. Gerald Merwin, associate professor of political science, told the news source.

The school currently provides students with basic online classes via the Electronic Core Curriculum for the University System of Georgia (eCore). VSU also offers additional courses in special education, English, political science, American sign language, sociology, philosophy, adult and career education as well as nursing, among others.

Jon Sizemore, assistant director of public services for distance learning, told the news provider that about 17% of students at VSU took at least one online course last semester.
