UNC Charlotte and Chapel Hill will offer a bachelor's degree in sleep science. In recent years, various studies have proven the importance of sleep on human health. For example, in 2005 researchers from the University of British Columbia found that not getting enough sleep or sleeping at odd hours puts people at risk for many major illnesses, including obesity, heart disease, cancer and diabetes, The Washington Post reports.
As scientists begin to better understand the importance of a good night's sleep, there will be a demand for professionals who specialize in this sector of healthcare. For this reason, the University of North Carolina (UNC) Charlotte and UNC Chapel Hill plan to pair up to offer the world's first bachelor's degree in neurodiagnostics and sleep science, according to a press release.
The new program, which is available through online education, will begin in the fall through UNC Charlotte's College of Health and Human Services’ Kinesiology Department. Students who enroll in the program will have the chance to not only learn more about how sleep affects health, but also better develop their leadership, writing, critical thinking and data interpretation skills.
After graduating, these bachelor's degree holders may be qualified to work in settings such as hospitals, research facilities, educational institutions, manufacturing companies, and specialized sleep and epilepsy labs.
