Tufts University recently launched a new PA program. As more members of the baby boomer generation approach retirement there will be a greater need for healthcare professionals to care for them and fill their vacant positions. For instance, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs for physician assistants will increase by 39% through 2018, making it one of the fastest-growing occupations of the decade.
Landing one of the many physician assistant jobs often means first completing a healthcare associate's or bachelor's degree program (nursing and paramedic are popular options), and then working in the field for several years. Afterward, professionals can enroll in a physician assistant (PA) program to enhance their knowledge and skills.
Recently, the Tufts University School of Medicine announced that it will launch one of these programs, with the first class to begin in January, according to The Tufts Daily. The program is pending approval for accreditation. Students can apply in May, and the first class will be comprised of about 30 individuals.
The PA program at Tufts will take about 25 months to complete. During the first 12 months, participants will study subjects such as advanced anatomy, physiology, surgery, psychiatry and behavioral medicine in the classroom, and for the final 13 months, they will participate in clinical rotations.
