With the 2011-2012 academic year set to begin, it is time for master of business administration (MBA) degree seekers to complete last-minute preparations before going back to school. According to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, this can include some minor soul searching, as it's good for students to examine where they're going before they attempt to figure out how to get there.

An MBA degree can open doors to many new career paths, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. This credential is typically necessary for a wide variety of high-level management and executive positions with large organizations. Therefore, individuals who plan to earn this credential may be unsure of exactly which title they want to hold after graduation.

BusinessWeek recommends that future MBA degree seekers browse career websites, speak to potential employers and gather information from colleagues. In doing so, they might find it easier to decide where they want business school to take them.

Today, some schools make it easier to do this by allowing current and prospective students to easily connect with alumni. For example, Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management encourages degree seekers to contact past students through Facebook and LinkedIn.
