In order to improve the quality of education for students in kindergarten through the 12th grade, teachers are using a variety of techniques. For example, many education organizations promote the use of spatial literacy. This is defined as the ability to understand spatial relationships as well as know how geographic space is represented.

While spatial literacy has not been integrated into the K-12 curriculum in many schools, professionals believe that it can help students find success in subjects such as mathematics, science, engineering and technology.

Educators who want to integrate this concept into their teaching can now do so by completing an online education program at the University of Redlands in California, school officials announced in a press release. This four-class course of study will allow students to earn certificates in spatial literacy.

The program, which will be offered in the fall through the School of Education, will train current teachers on spatial literacy and will prepare them to integrate it into their classrooms. These academic professionals will also be introduced to technology such as global positioning systems and geographic information systems.
