In 1992, Shaquille O'Neal left Louisiana State University (LSU) to become a professional basketball player, leaving behind him his chance of graduating with the rest of his class, The Washington Post reports. However, he promised his mother he would one day earn a college degree and since then, he has done more than fulfill this promise.

The now retired NBA star first earned a bachelor's degree in business from LSU in 2000. Then, in 2005, he completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Phoenix.

"It's just something to have on my résumé [for] when I go back into reality," O'Neal told the Post after earning his MBA degree. "Someday I might have to put down a basketball and have a regular 9-to-5 like everybody else."

This week, Shaquille O'Neal will advance his education even further when he earns a doctoral degree in education from Barry University, the Sun Sentinel reports.

Given the NBA star's hectic schedule, he paid for his professors to fly to cities like Cincinnati, Los Angeles and New York to meet him for one-on-one classes. Dr. David M. Kopp, chairman of the school's organizational learning and leadership program, told the Sentinel O'Neal was a good student and "very intellectually curious."
