Many parents are encouraging their children to major in high-paying fields. With the cost of college rising an average of 5% each year, many parents are striving to find ways to make higher education more affordable for their children. While only one-third of parents are currently considering the total cost of college, those who are doing so are already striving to control their children's post-graduation debt and encouraging their kids to pick less expensive schools, a new survey by Fidelity Investments found.
On top of taking these measures to ensure their children can afford an associate's or bachelor's degree, the survey found that about 42% of parents with children in college have encouraged their kids to focus on a particular major to secure a high-paying job after graduation. Among the most popular majors these adults suggest are computer science, nursing, engineering, psychology, biology and accounting.
By encouraging their children to choose these specific majors, parents thought they would earn an average of $70,300 per year after graduation. Additionally, 78% of adults said they are optimistic that their children would find a job in their field of choice within six months, while 23% said they expect their kids to find a job before they graduate.
