Online University Launches Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics
Linguistic anthropologists investigate the history of and changes to language over time in various cultures, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Overall employment of these professionals is expected to increase by 22% through 2018.

Schools such as Ashford University are launching online degrees in this field. According to a press release, the college recently announced that it will offer an online bachelor's in applied linguistics.

"Because human language is perhaps the most pervasive manifestation of the mind and culture, it follows that we should teach the theories that support it," said Mary Alexander, executive dean of the school's College of Liberal Arts. "Ashford is one of very few universities to offer this bachelor's degree online, and students who complete this program will be well-prepared to move further in this growing field."

She added that the computer Watson - which was on the game show Jeapardy and played against human opponents - is effective because of its natural language processing, which is an element that is taught in the program.

Graduates of this degree track may find employment in teaching, therapeutic and computational linguistics settings.
