A once-homeless student plans to attend Harvard University in the fall.Throughout his high school career, Ohio's David Boone saw his fair share of challenges. After a local gang vandalized his home, he found himself wondering where he would sleep each night, Fox 8 Cleveland reports. Although friends and family offered him a place to spend the night when they could, Boone was sometimes forced to sleep on park benches.
On his wooden bench at Artha Woods Park, he would fill his backpack with books and paper, creating a makeshift pillow, notes The Associated Press. There, from the spectator's bench at the park's baseball diamond, Boone would try to ignore the crime surrounding him.
However, no matter where he laid his head at night, he never stopped studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Now, after years of hard work and dedication, Boone is preparing to graduate from high school and accept a full scholarship to the prestigious Harvard University. In working toward a bachelor's degree, Boone hopes to provide a level of security and safety to his family.
"I saw that as a way out," he told Fox. "I saw going to any college as the way to escape, and a way to secure that these types of things don't continue to happen to my family."
At Harvard, Boone plans to study electrical engineering and computer science.
