Ohio aims to help college students graduate in three years. With the cost of attending four-year universities as high as ever, Ohio is trying to find ways to make earning a bachelor's degree more affordable. To accomplish this, the state is looking to its four-year institutions to provide three-year degree options for students who want to graduate early and, as a result, save more money, The Plain Dealer reports.
Under state legislation, Ohio's four-year schools were required to submit three-year degree plans for 10% of their programs by October 15, with plans for 60% of their programs needed by 2014. While Jim Petro, chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, does not expect a large number of students to pursue the three-year degree option, he believes it is important for them to have the choice and see that it can be done.
"I went to college for four years," Petro told The Plain Dealer. "Frankly I think the four years was the valuable part of the experience. But others might be more anxious to get their degree and get into the workplace. I think we should encourage that."
Ohio's Kent State University recently announced on its website that it has created several accelerated bachelor's degree programs to help students graduate in three years. Accounting, business management, communication studies, history and sport administration are among the subjects available in this shorter format.
