Marriage and Family Therapists Can Benefit From Earning Master’s DegreesTherapists who specialize in marriages and families diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders, whether cognitive, affective or behavioral, within the context of relationships, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Those who wish to launch careers in this field can benefit from enrolling in master's degree programs, which provide the necessary training to become employed in this industry. Schools such as Northcentral University (NCU) offer marriage and family therapy (MFT) master's degrees. According to a press release, NCU's MFT program was recently approved by the California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) as meeting the educational requirements for licensure in this field.
"We have worked hard to designate a curriculum and clinical training process that sets new standards for MFT education," said Branden Henline, chair of the program.
The school also launched an MFT doctoral degree. Both the programs focus on family and couple dynamics, family therapy models and interventions, therapy with children and adolescents, couple's therapy, working with people in crisis, issues related to gender and diversity, individual and family development as well as ethics and current research in family therapy.
