Some master's journalism programs are beginning to focus on business skills. Many graduates who hold a Bachelor's degree in Journalism have probably heard an instructor or peer say that the only reason to earn a master's degree in the field is to become a journalism professor. This belief is beginning to change, as many such master's programs have begun to focus on the business end of the industry, giving students crucial knowledge of how media corporations run.
At New York's Columbia University, for example, students can earn a dual master's degree in business and journalism, the school's website states. In five semesters, participants study media organization and management as well as business communications.
Dena Levitz, the manager of digital strategies for the Newspaper Association of America, recently told PBS that she is working toward a master's degree in media entrepreneurship at American University to enhance her business acumen. As the state of journalism continues to change, Levitz said it is becoming increasingly important for journalists to understand the big picture of their industry.
"I...think the onus is now on journalists the world over to understand how their publications are making money and who is reading their work," Levitz said. "We have to not just be able to produce video, but know how to use the platform to add to the bottom line."
