AMA Foundation announces healthcare scholarship recipientsStudents who have enrolled in health-related bachelor's and master's level healthcare degree programs who wish to lower the cost of their education can benefit from annual scholarship programs. Several national organizations offer these yearly opportunities, which are awarded to individuals who have achieved academic success and show significant potential for their careers.
For example, a total of 24 medical students were named the winners of the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation's annual Physicians of Tomorrow scholarship program. Recipients were given $10,000 each, and were chosen based on academic record, letters of recommendation, personal statement, need for financial assistance and their contributions to community services projects.
In addition to the AMA Foundation scholarships, financial assistance was awarded through a program funded by the Audio-Digest Foundation, which recognized future healthcare professionals for their support the communication of science. Also, winners were awarded the Dr. Lin and Minta Hill scholarships, which were given to those enrolled at an Oklahoma-based medical school.
The fourth round of scholarships were given through the Johnson F. Hammond, MD program, which recognized individuals for their support of medical journalism.
Barney Maynard, president of the foundation, stated that winners showed "outstanding academic achievements, but they have also made the commitment to improve public health through volunteer activities, research and leadership roles in their communities."
