A recent study by Ball State University indicates that smartphone ownership among students has grown immensely over the past few years – from 27% in 2009 to 69% in 2012. Add in those who own tablet devices, and that’s a lot of young people who can benefit from educational apps. But which ones are the most useful when you’re trying to earn a degree?

Here are five of the best apps for college students, plus one that will help you wind down after a hard week of hitting the books:

1. Amazon Student. Buying a new stack of paper textbooks can be one of the most insidious expenses faced by students – and one they need to repeat every semester. But with Amazon Student, you can snap a picture of your book’s barcode, and the app will tell you where to get it at the best price. Perhaps more importantly, it allows you to sell back your used textbooks for Amazon gift cards (which you can often use to buy the following semester’s books).

2. Graphing Calculator. An absolute must for students with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) majors, Graphing Calculator has all the important functions of a good scientific calculator. Since such devices can cost anywhere from $50 - $100, you’re much better off forking over the $2 for this app.

Once you’ve used your other apps to complete your coursework and prepare for upcoming exams, some downtime is often in order. Fortunately, there’s an app for that!

6. DrinkOwl. This app helps you find nearby bars and liquor stores, and lists any specials they are currently running. Drink within walking distance of your dorm room on the cheap!
